Alabama State University, founded 1887, is a historically black university located in Montgomery, Alabama. ASU was originally founded within Marion, Alabama in 1867 as the Lincoln Normal School. Around 1887, a university opened around its fresh location around Montgomery however an Alabama State Supreme Court opinion forced a school to vary its title; so, a school was renamed a Normal School for Colored Students. Around 1954, the school vary its title to Alabama State College. A college regained university status inside 1969.
Alabama State's colors come black and gold and their nickname is the Hornets. Alabama State sports teams participate inside NCAA Division I (I-AA for football) in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC).
